New device to alert police

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE April 22. The City police on Tuesday introduced Hotline Police Alert System to alert them when the offenders are at your doorstep.

Using your existing telephone, you can now make the police aware that you are in danger without talking or ringing. All that you have to do is to keep receiver off the hook for 20 seconds. The police get all the required information at the lapse of 20 seconds. All this comes without much cost. The Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, inaugurated the system here.

According to S.Balasubramanian of Bay Talkitec, which has developed and tested the new system in Madikeri, the BSNL would charge Rs. 20 a month for providing the facility. The police were not charging. However, one needs to register with the police giving their details such as name, address, and the type of business or profession one is in.

This information is flashed on the screen of the computer in the Police Control Room along with an audio alarm. The new facility is suitable for banks, jewellers, persons living in isolated places or old persons living alone, according to the police.

A Bay Talkitec executive said the conversation that takes place in the scene of offence would be recorded, which could prove to be important for the police investigation and action. The system could handle multiple calls and callers could get docket numbers. The system could generate comprehensive statistics about the calls made to it.

The police said people could use the hotline application forms from the customer service centres or divisional offices and send them to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) in the office of the Police Commissioner on Infantry Road.

The applications would be forwarded to the BSNL by the police. Interested persons may call 2200912.
