Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Special Correspondent
The cart was being driven in a rash and negligent manner by Ramamurthy, aged 53, and nearly knocked down a pedestrian, S.Murthi. On a complaint filed by him, the vehicle was seized and the driver was arrested. He was charged under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, and remanded to custody on a case registered by the Sub-Inspector, Sambasivam, a press release said. Despite the warning given by the city police, motorised fish-carts remain a permanent fixture on many city roads, many of them utilising the truck strike to operate. In several interior areas, even in the Central parts of the city, the fish-carts have not suspended their operations. Not fazed by the prospect of being spotted even in daylight, they have been carrying on with the supply of materials and even transporting people. K.K.Nagar is found to be one of the prime areas for the operation of motorised fish-carts. These vehicles were spotted since Monday on Anna Main Road, Alagirisamy Road, Lakshmanaswamy Road and Rajamannar Road. In Kodambakkam, despite the reports appearing in the media, the motorised carts are used to transport wastepaper from shops in United India Colony. Use of the carts is confined to early morning and late evening in some of the areas, particularly for transport of vegetables from the Mambalam market near Ranganathan Street and Madley subway.
