This was announced at a meeting of top officials convened here today by the Chief Secretary, N. Chandrasekharan Nair, to discuss the shortage in the vegetable market caused by the truckers' strike and review the steps taken by the Government to overcome it. The meeting noted the strong market intervention efforts being made by the Civil Supplies Corporation and the smooth distribution of essential commodities being made by the Horticorp and the Maveli stores. The Maveli Stores were distributing sugar at Rs 12.70 per kg. The meeting, which discussed the reports of the District Collectors on the situation prevailing in various districts, decided to provide police protection for vehicles used for bringing essentials. It also resolved to keep the price line under strict control and review the situation on a daily basis. The meeting was attended by the Transport Commissioner, K.P. Somarajan, the Home Secretary, N. Ramakrishnan, the Food Secretary, Dharamveer, the Agricultural Production Commissioner, C. Ramachandran, the Transport and Information Secretary, G. Rajasekharan and the Civil Supplies Director, V.R. Padmanabhan.
