12 mega industrial projects get nod

Bangalore April 22. The State Government has approved 12 mega industrial projects with an overall investment of Rs. 3,620.33 crore, and employment potential of over 68,000. The 12 projects were cleared on Monday by the high-level committee for the approval of new mega industrial projects under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna.

Giving details of the approvals, the Minister for Large- and Medium-scale Industries, R.V. Deshpande, said Intel Technology India would be investing Rs. 196.80 crore in Bangalore for setting up a development centre for design and development of next-generation microprocessors, semi-conductors, and memory products. The centre would become operational in the next 10 months.

The project, among other things, includes the establishment of a large campus in the IT Corridor to provide employment to about 3,000 software and electronics professionals. Intel, he said, had chosen Bangalore for the facility over locations such as Malaysia, Taiwan, Russia, and China.

The committee also approved a proposal of TVS Motor Company to set up a new facility (Unit-II) for the manufacture of two-, three-, and four-wheelers with an investment of Rs. 500 crore at Nanjangud in Mysore District. The project would provide employment to 900 people.

The project of Himalaya Drug Company for the establishment of a manufacturing unit and a research and development centre for ayurvedic medicines and formulations with an investment of Rs. 165 crore also got the nod. The centre would be located at Bidadi in Ramanagaram taluk, he said.

The project of Infosys Technologies for expansion of facilities at Konnappana Agrahara at Electronics City with an additional investment of Rs. 110 crore was approved, he said and added that the project would create an additional 3,50,000 sq. ft of work space and provide employment to 6,000 IT professionals.

The other approvals included a research and development centre of Astra Zeneca India Private Ltd. for development of anti-TB drugs at Hebbal with an investment of Rs. 72.57 crore; a project of the Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers Association for setting up a centre for excellence for manpower training in machine tool industry with an investment of Rs. 78 crore; GMR Group's project for IT-enabled services at Whitefield with an investment of Rs. 130 crore; a project of IBC Knowledge Park Private Ltd. project for a software technology park at Byrasandra at a cost of Rs. 82.20 crore; a 300-bed hi-tech hospital at a cost of Rs. 75 crore at Hassan by Sheriff Academy of Higher Education; a software technology park at Mahadevapura and Kaggadasapura near Krishnarajapuram at a cost of Rs. 139 crore; and a project of Jindal Vijaynagar Steel Ltd. for "slime disposal facility" at Toranagallu in Bellary District with an investment of Rs. 11.76 crore.

Mr. Deshpande also said that the committee had approved the proposal of Global Telecom City Developers Private Ltd. for setting up a "Telecom and Knowledge Special Economic Zone" at Kondasapura in Bangalore South taluk with an investment of Rs. 2,060 crore.

The proposed project envisioned a state-of-the-art international telecom gateway to direct traffic within the country and to various parts of the world. It was promoted by Data Access India Ltd., an Internet service provider; Pacific Century Cyber Works, a Hong Kong-based company; and S.A. Peeran of Bangalore.
