Lottery tickets: CM warns of action against violators

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry April 22. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today said he had asked the police to keep vigil and nab those selling raffle tickets clandestinely anywhere in the Union Territory. Strict action would be taken against those violating the ban on sale of lottery tickets.

He was replying to a calling attention motion tabled by A. Anbalagan (AIADMK). Mr. Anbalagan also placed before the Speaker, M.D.R. Ramachandran, a bunch of raffle tickets the draw of which was slated for today. The Speaker asked the Chief Minister to go into the whole issue.

Mr. Anbalagan said in the name of sale of raffle tickets a big gambling was going on. Only after the Tamil Nadu Government imposed the ban, did the Pondicherry Administration impose the ban.

When there was no ban, the administration had imposed an eight per cent sales tax on the tickets. But the sellers paid just Rs. 1,620 as tax to the Government. But the contributions to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund was around Rs. 1 crore.

Mr. Anbalagan said innocent people were falling a prey to raffle tickets. The police had initiated action against those clandestinely selling tickets, but only innocent retail salesmen were caught while stockists went scot-free.

The Chief Minster detailed the steps taken to ban the sale. He said he was also aware that the raffle ticket mania had been eating into the well-being of the people and was wrecking several families.

A drive against the clandestine sale of the tickets had resulted in nabbing of some persons in Grand Bazaar and Orleanpet police stations in recent days.
