Tennis
Sania Mirza continued to assert herself, as she beat Yulia Klimchenko without dropping a game. Manisha Malhotra struggled in another three-setter but ensured that India maintained its clean record. The doubles was a formality as Isha Lakhani and Megha Vakharia powered through, dropping three games. India had beaten Philippines 3-0 in the opening match, its first win over the Filipinos in three meetings. With two out of four teams qualifying to group `I', India may have already assured its berth in the elite league, but will be keen to down the fourth team, Pacific Oceania on Wednesday. India and Philippines had been relegated from group `I' last year, and both look likely to regain their places. Philippines recorded a 3-0 victory over Pacific Oceania this day. In group `I', the competition was a lot better. Japan was sitting pretty at the top in pool `A' with wins over New Zealand and Korea. China and New Zealand had recorded a win each, while Korea and Hong Kong had not won anything as yet. In pool `B', Indonesia was on top with wins over Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei. Thailand also recorded two wins over Malaysia and Uzbekistan, but was in second position as it had lost a point to the latter. Chinese Taipei and Malaysia had won a match each, while Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan were yet to open their account. The top two teams from group `I' will make it to the world group play-off. The results: India beat Kyrgyzstan 3-0 (Sania Mirza bt Yulia Klimchenko 6-0, 6-0; Manisha Malhotra bt Kanykey Koichumanova 6-1, 3-6, 6-2; Isha Lakhani and Megha Vakharia bt Olga Alekseyeva and Kanykey Koichumanova 6-0, 6-3).
