Caught in a legal web

LOS ANGELES: `Spiderman' has caught studio Sony Pictures and comic book publisher Marvel Entreprises in a sticky legal web over merchandising rights to the blockbuster, which has a sequel already in production. Marvel, which holds the rights to the superhero, told Sony in February that it wanted to end its licensing deal after the sequel to last summer's record-smashing hit that raked in $800 million in ticket sales worldwide. The latest instalment, The Amazing Spiderman, starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, began production last week in New York, according to Hollywood's trade press. Sony wanted to resolve the dispute through private arbitration, claiming Marvel was using litigation as a tactic to negotiate a deal on more favourable terms. But a judge ruled on Monday that the case would go to a jury trial with public hearings.
