Fortnight of Sundays

Sir, — The article, " A fortnight of Sundays" ( April 16 ), by Inder Malhotra reminds me of the day when the U.S. President, John F. Kennedy, was assassinated. I was studying at the University of Texas, Austin. President Kennedy was expected to come to Austin from Dallas. I was planning to go along with the others to greet him near the airport. A senior professor was lecturing in the class when a staff entered and handed him a sheet of paper. He read it and was quiet for a few seconds. Then he announced the President's assassination. We were shocked and silenced. After some time, the professor resumed his lecture. But a student requested that he postpone it since the topic required deep discussion and they were unable to concentrate. He agreed and discussed earlier topics. Next day, the class was watching the funeral preparations when the professor entered the classroom. The television was switched off and the class resumed.
