Letters to the Editor
Sir, The news report, "Sand quarrying claims official's life" ( April 21 ), made sad reading. The Government will, as usual, offer its sympathies to the bereaved family. Public memory is short and this incident would also be forgotten. There have been similar instances in the past and it seems that no concrete steps were taken by the authorities concerned to safeguard the interests of officials engaged in this kind of duty. Lack of a strong and modern infrastructure with a rule-implementing staff seems to be a major obstacle in tackling illegal quarrying. It is also seen that the grabbers have the support and sponsorship of politicians and officials. Relevant laws and rules should be made stringent, providing severe punishment not only to these anti-social elements but also to their abetters.
S. Bakthavathsalan,
