Modi Govt. has paralysed police: Cong.

By Our Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR APRIL 18. The Gujarat Congress today attacked the Narendra Modi Government for "paralysing" the police department in the State.

At a meeting of senior party leaders and elected representatives of various bodies to discuss the proposed party rally to mark the Gujarat foundation day on May 1, the State unit president, Shankarsinh Waghela, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Amarsinh Chaudhary, charged the Modi administration with "all round failure".

Not a day passed in the city — the parliamentary constituency of the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani — without a major incident of crime being reported, Mr. Waghela said adding that Mr. Modi had failed to protect his "Ram sevaks" in Godhra and his own ministerial colleague, Haren Pandya, in Ahmedabad. And police were being a party to the actions of the BJP and had lost its effectiveness.

The two leaders said that the prevailing drought conditions had caused immense suffering to the people and the Government had failed to draw proper plans to meet the situation.Cattle were dying and people were facing acute shortage of drinking water. The trading circles were being subjected to harassment because of the implementation of the Value Added Tax system.

The AICC secretary, K.K. Sharma, in-charge of Gujarat, described the BJP Government as a "liability" to the people.

Besides the rally here, the Congress has planned to launch month-long "sammelans", people's awareness programmes, in each taluka headquarters from May 1 and in each district from June 15.
