Arun Jaitley meets U.S. Congressmen

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI April 18. India said today the proposed New Jersey legislation intended to ban outsourcing for government contracts in information technology appeared protectionist and was virtually denial of market access.

The Commerce and Industry Minister, Arun Jaitley, told a visiting delegation of U.S. Congressmen representing the India Caucus that this was an issue of market access whose importance lay not so much in the limited impact it might have in the short run as in the strong protectionist signal it gave out.

During the discussions with the delegation on a wide range of issues including bilateral trade and the need for more foreign direct investment from the U.S., he told the Congressmen that outsourcing offered several economic advantages to American firms such as reduction in their overhead costs and improvement in their competitiveness.

He said India had emerged as an attractive source for high quality low-cost back, office operations because of its competitiveness in this area.
