Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Special Correspondent
According to reports reaching here, the structures were constructed as part of the project, initiated by the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM), Kozhikode, and implemented by the Department of Science and Technology and the Public Works Department of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Under the project, more than 100 forro-cement roof water harvesting structures had already been constructed in five of the 10 inhabited island of Lakshadweep. K.S. Mehra, Administrator, Lakshadweep, while inaugurating the function said that rainwater, which was the precious source of freshwater, had to be tapped as much as possible for solving the alarmingly increasing saline water ingression in the islands. The CWRDM has initiated the project funded by ICEF, the outlay of which is Rs. 6 crores, with the purpose of managing freshwater resources of Lakshadweep islands through rain water harvesting, construction of radial wells, rejuvenation of tanks and ponds, introducing sanitation measures and insulating the fresh water sources from sea water, enlisting the participation of the islanders. The project also envisages hydrogeologic investigations to help in controlling and managing ground water sources.
