A total of 24 tankers from Vellore district, 12 each from Vellore and Ranipet were operated to Chennai in convoys with police escort on Friday morning. Though there was no scarcity of petrol and diesel as such, the public were resorting to panic buying and filling up tanks of their two-wheelers and cars in the last four days, fearing a scarcity situation. This panic buying has resulted in a few petrol bunks going dry in other parts of the district such as Ambur and Vaniyambadi.According to a spokesman of the Vellore District Petroleum Dealers Association, the dealers were prepared to operate their own tankers provided police escort was given. Those having two tankers were even prepared to share the loads with other dealers. The Vellore Collector, A.C. Mohandoss, told The Hindu that police escort would be provided to the tankers as long as the strike persisted. As for vegetables, they were continuing to be transported by town buses to the Nethaji Market and to the `uzhavar sandhais' in Vellore.
