Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Special Correspondent
On Friday many engineering colleges expressed their willingness to surrender more of the `management' quota seats, says a release from the vice-chancellor, E. Balagurusamy. As per the policy announced by the government, unaided minority colleges have been allowed to fill 70 per cent of their sanctioned strength and non-minority colleges up to 50 per cent. The rest of the seats (30 per cent in minority-run institutions and 50 per cent in non-minority colleges) are to be filled through the single-window system. The Government, however, gave the individual colleges the option of surrendering more seats to the SWS, originally up to March 31. University sources said many colleges, especially in rural areas, were keen on putting more seats under SWS. Giving time till May 31 would enable the colleges to assess the demand for various branches and also decide on the number of additional seats they want to surrender.
4 more colleges made deemed varsities
In another release, the University said the Human Resource Development Ministry had confirmed the deemed university status on four more institutions: the SRM Engineering College, Kattankulathur (Kancheepuram district), Dr. MGR Engineering Colege, Maduravoil, Chennai; the Amrita Institute of Technology and Science, Coimbatore and the Bharath Institute of Technology, Selaiyur, here. These institutions would no longer be affiliated to the Anna University and their seats would not be included for SWS admissions in 2003-04.
