After laying the foundation stone for the Rs. 60-crore project for a new airport terminal, Mr. Vajpayee said it would be the most modern of the country's airports and would match international standards. "The Haj flights are already taking off from here directly and soon flights for other international destinations should leave from here," he said adding the airport would be a big attraction for people visiting the Valley. "It is the era of connectivity and airports are being set up in every nook and corner of the country to shorten distances." The Union Civil Aviation Minister, Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, said, "the new airport terminal with most modern facilities will be completed in 24 months and international flights to various destinations should not take much time." "It will be on the pattern of Dubai airport with the most modern aerobridges. It will be the first terminal in the country to be raised by steel panels." Such structures, he said, were only available at Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Dubai. An additional Rs. 100 crores would be earmarked for the project in the next five-year plan, Mr. Hussain said. Under the expansion plan, the terminal's passenger capacity would be increased to 950 from 450. The Airports Authority of India had also completed the Kargil airport at a cost of Rs. 37 crores and handed it over to the Defence Ministry for strategic reasons, he said. Mr Vajpayee also laid the foundation for the North-South corridor, part of his ambitious "golden card" project which envisages linking Kashmir and Kanyakumari as well as other parts in the east and west. A 18-km four-lane road is being constructed on the outskirts of Srinagar city to connect it with the National Highway. The Union Roads and Highways Minister, B. C. Khanduri, spoke about the project. Mr. Vajpayee is scheduled to inaugurate a railway bridge and computerised railway reservation centres at Qazigund tomorrow.
