School uses cell-phone to communicate results

MUMBAI APRIL 18. The cell-phone has replaced the postman, at least in one Mumbai-based school, which has communicated this year's final examination class results by Short Message Service (SMS) to the parents of about 1,000 of its students.

This innovative method of declaring school results was implemented by the `Anandilal Podar High School' based in North-West Mumbai. The school, on a previous occasion, had posted the exam results on the Internet.

The school principal, Vandana Lulla, told UNI here today that the idea behind using the SMS for conveying the results was to enable students to enjoy their holidays without the pressure of going back to school for the results.

``Earlier, we used to put the results on our website to enable our students to access it from anywhere through the net. But with problems such as inaccessibility of computers in remote areas and busy or non-functioning telephone lines, we thought it more convenient to flash the results through SMS on mobile phone this time,'' she said.

The SMS beeps the marks scored by a particular student in each subject along with the grand total.

Ms. Lulla said the school had created a database of all its students on its mainframe computer, where the details of the children were fed in along with the mobile numbers of their parents. It was observed that almost all the parents had mobile phones and so, it was decided by the school to use the SMS facility. A special software has been installed for the same.

``We have received excellent response to this idea and many parents have even sent the SMS back thanking us for it," she said, adding ``Some parents are also asking for results of other students who are friends of their wards''.

Podar, probably the first school to start the facility, will also hold the conventional `open days' for all those who want to check the answer papers and interact with the teachers, as well as make the results available on the net.

The Mumbai University and Government departments had already started the system of placing the results of their various examinations on their websites, including the SSC and HSC results, but this is the first instance of results through cell phones. — UNI
