Press and Reporters' Responsibility

Speaking at the Canadian Press agency's annual dinner in Toronto on the 16th, Sir Christopher Chancellor, General Manager of Reuters declared that the Press had to be ready at all times to fight for its freedom to present the truth. The modern reporter had to record facts without hesitation or delay. He had to state what he believed to be true, and commit himself. He had to deal quickly and accurately with momentous and increasingly difficult and complicated events. He could not afford the luxury of second thoughts. ``Inevitably,'' said Sir Christopher, ``the emphasis is on speed. The reporter, dealing with often highly technical yet vitally important news must face daily the difficult task of marrying speed with accuracy.''
