Letters to the Editor
Sir, This is with reference to Inder Malhotra's article `A fortnight of Sundays' (April 16) . We have a number of special characteristics which make us, Indians, unique one such characteristic is our approach to work and our work culture. As many as 202 paid holidays a year must be shocking to the world, but not to us. We believe that the anniversaries of our dead leaders must be remembered and they be honoured by declaring those days as holidays at the cost of the public exchequer. If the government employees have a specific work culture can their leaders have another? They collect a sitting allowance when they do not `sit' in the respective forums. They also frequently sanction salary hikes for themselves. We have proved to the world that we can develop with minimum effort and compete with the most developed countries, for we are miracle-workers. It is this miracle working that will translate the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's craving for an eight per cent growth rate from a pipe dream into a reality. Hilda Raja, Chennai
