Two independent Councillors join Congress

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI APRIL 11. In a further boost to the already strong position of the Congress Party in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, two independent Councillors today joined the party along with their supporters in the presence of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Subhash Chopra. The two Councillors, Aruna from Alipur ward and Yashwanti Dagar from Isapur ward, became part of the Congress.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Chopra said the two had written to him a few weeks ago expressing their desire to join the Congress so as to strengthen the fight against BJP "which was dividing the country on communal and religious lines''. The Councillors said only the Congress was fit to lead the country at this crucial juncture and so they wanted to join the party to oppose the saffron party tooth and nail. Both the Councillors expressed full faith in the leadership of the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, and felt she was the right person to lead the country out of the present depressing state.

Mr. Chopra further said the double standards of the BJP had been exposed by the recent bribery scam in the DDA and the indictment of officials who had been personally got appointed by the Delhi BJP chief, Madan Lal Khurana. He said the Congress party stood by its demand for action against Mr. Khurana and probe in the land scam under which a large number of out-of-turn and arbitrary allotments were made by the Union Development Ministry to various BJP leaders, Union Ministers and Sangh Parivar organisations by throwing all norms to winds.

Stating that the performance of the Sheila Dikshit Government had been excellent during the past four and half years of rule, Mr. Chopra said the party would return to power after the Assembly elections in Delhi with a thumping majority as the achievements of the Congress Government had been huge during this period. Also the people of Delhi were fully aware of the communal agenda of the BJP and had not forgotten the various scams which rocked the country under the Vajpayee Government at the Centre. The people of Delhi were waiting for the Assembly elections to give a befitting reply to the BJP. Also present at the press conference was the Leader of the House in MCD, Ram Babu Sharma, who said a large number of revolutionary measures had been taken by the Corporation during the past one year to bring about efficiency and put an end to corruption.
