Australia in command

GEORGETOWN April 11. Justin Langer (129 not out) and Ricky Ponting with unbeaten 103 put Australia in a commanding position against West Indies in the first Test. Australia had scored 253 for one at lunch.

Earlier on Thursday, West Indies had scored 237 all out with Shivnarine Chanderpaul hitting the third fastest hundred in Test history.

It could have been a lot worse for the home team, which was reduced to 53 for five before Chanderpaul, batting in front of his home crowd, helped it to relative respectability.

The West Indies was also boosted by an undefeated, one-legged half-century by Ridley Jacobs, who batted with a runner after straining a hamstring.

He was left stranded on 54 as the wickets fell around him on a day when four West Indies players were dismissed for ducks and six failed to make double figures.
