Golf
In a letter to the Indian Golf Union (IGU), the Government has stated that a championship initiated by a few private enthusiasts could not be called as SAARC championship. The championship was started in 1999 when Bangalore was the host. After Dhaka conducted it in 2000, India had stepped in to replace Nepal (2001) and Pakistan (2002) as the host. There is no mention of such a championship in the SAARC Protocol, a letter from the Sports Ministry stated. The championship came under the scanner last year when the Government first asked the IGU, being the only recognised body for amateur golf, to take over its organisation. Held at the Classic Golf Resort in Gurgaon, Maldives withdrew at the eleventh hour and the organisers made the mistake of fielding a second-string Indian team as the Maldives team. The 2003 championship is scheduled to be held at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) course here from April 18 to 20 with Friendship trophy slated for April 17. Following the government objection, the organisers are now scampering to rename the tournament. Our Sports Reporter
