Hooch tragedy: 20 more hospitalised

KOLLAM April11. With two more deaths reported today from the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, the death toll in the Kooppana hooch tragedy has risen to seven.

More than 30 persons who consumed the killer brew from the hooch dens at Kooppana are still under treatment at the MCH.

A few among them are reported to be serious.

Those who succumbed to the killer brew today are `Gin' Shaji (36) and Babu Pillai (52). Shaji was a hooch den operator at Kooppana and he had consumed a portion of the hooch which he had kept for sale.

The five persons who died yesterday were identified as Vishwanathan (45), Aravindakshan (45), Vishwanathan Pillai (44), Sreedharan (70) and Prashanthan (42). All the victims are natives of the Kooppana-Anchalumoodu areas, near Kollam.

Meanwhile, 20 more persons who had consumed the hooch from Kooppana were admitted to the district hospital here today.

The bodies of those killed in the tragedy were handed over to their relatives after post-mortem examination at the MCH. Even the bodies of those who died here yesterday were also taken to the MCH for post-mortem examination.
