No new release in three theatres

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 11. A crisis is brewing in the film industry yet again with the distributors deciding not to release new films in three theatres in Thrissur during Vishu for allegedly violating the pact signed between the exhibitors and distributors on March 7 last.

The Distributors Association Kerala president, Kireedom Unni, told The Hindu here today that following the talks held here on March 7, the Kerala Film Exhibitors Federation had agreed to increase the distributors' share from theatres, hike the representatives' bata and stop cutting the noon show bata from the distributors.

Though the talks were held in the presence of the Culture Minister, G. Karthikeyan, the Information Minister, M.M. Hassan, the Kerala State Film Development Corporation chairman, P.V. Gangadharan, the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairman, T.K. Rajeev Kumar, and representatives of the producers, exhibitors and distributors, three theatres in Thrissur have not implemented the decisions so far, he said. The distributors have hence decided not to release new films in these theatres. ``We patiently waited for a month but they seem to be unconcerned and the association has decided to go ahead with stern action, Mr. Unni said. The association had initially raised 12 demands but reduced it to three in the interest of the industry. But no results have been forthcoming, Mr. Unni said. Onam and Vishu are the two seasons which the producers look forward to releasing new films. The month-long stalemate was resolved through talks and the industry was gradually emerging from the red. In the absence of a solution, the crisis would deepen in the coming days.
