While the CPI(M) demanded a judicial inquiry into the mishap, the CPI sought immediate resignation of the Excise Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan. The BJP also demanded an urgent probe to bring the guilty to book. The tragedy, the three parties said, was the fallout of the Government's faulty abkari policy and its `unholy' nexus with the liquor lobby. The CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, pointed out that about half-a-dozen liquor tragedies had occurred after the Antony Government assumed office and sought stern action against officials who had failed in preventing the mishap. The CPI State secretary, Veliyam Bhargavan, said the liquor mafia was having a free run in the State and smuggling in illicit liquor in large quantities from neighbouring States. The BJP State general secretary, P. P. Mukundan, said similar mishaps would recur if the Government did not launch an intense drive against the liquor mafia.
