Sanam rallies to oust Rupesh

NEW DELHI APRIL 11. Sanam Singh recovered from a sluggish start to outplay the top seed Rupesh Roy of West Bengal 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals of the under-18 section in the AITA Super Series junior tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Friday.

Both Sanam and Rupesh had returned from the ITF junior circuit after the group `I' tournament in Manila to compete at home. It was Sanam's sharpness and athleticism that won him the day under hot weather conditions even as Rupesh gave up the fight rather early.

Towards the end, Rupesh was even returning with his left hand and the top seed, with an impressive collection of 427 points compared to Sanam's 219, just went through the motions.

Third-seeded Sanam will now be challenged by unseeded Wrik Ganguly who played with a lot of energy while beating the wiry J. Vishnu Vardhan of Andhra Pradesh 6-3, 7-5.

In a keenly contested battle, Wrik prevailed with his attacking game and gutsy approach.

In the girls' under-18 semifinals, Deepa Chakraborty tamed talented left-hander D. Tejaswini of Andhra Pradesh 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-1. As the match wore on, Tejaswini was unable to stroke well and Deepa just kept the ball in play to cruise home. Deepa will take on top-seeded Parul Goswami who beat the sixth seed Parija Maloo in straight sets.

There was quality stuff in the under-14 category too. Navneetha Kannan of Tamil Nadu played an all-round aggressive game to overcome a stiff challenge from top-seeded Kinshuk Sharma of Chandigarh in three sets. He will meet another talented stroke-maker, Kaushik Das of Assam who won in three sets against the second seed Mesheer Vaswani of Karnataka.

In the girls' under-14 event, Varsha Dutta of Assam beat Chandigarh's Takseen Bains in straight sets. It was a lot easier for second-seeded Gayatri Krishnan who was fully focused in beating the seventh seed Amrita Seth for the loss of just three games.

The results (semifinals):

Boys (under-18): Sanam Singh bt Rupesh Roy 3-6, 6-1, 6-0; Wrik Ganguly bt J. Vishnu Vardhan 6-3, 7-5.

Under-14: Navneetha Kannan bt Kinshuk Sharma 3-6, 6-3, 6-2; Kaushik Das bt Mesheer Vaswani 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Girls (under-18): Parul Goswami bt Parija Maloo 7-5, 6-3; Deepa Chakraborty bt D. Tejaswini 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-1.

Under-14: Varsha Dutta bt Takseen Bains 6-4, 6-3; Gayatri Krishnan bt Amrita Seth 6-2, 6-1.
