STOCKHOLM: Swedish lawmakers on Friday ended legal recognition of the nobility, reducing its status to a regular non-profit organisation. The decision, which was made without a vote, takes effect on July 1. The move was largely symbolic, as the nobility agreed to give up its political power in 1865. The monarch is not affected by the changes. The proposal also annulled a 1723 provision giving noblemen the right to leave the country without the king's permission and guarantees of royal assistance if they are captured as prisoners of war.
