Mananthavady Bishop to be laid to rest today

KOZHIKODE APRIL 7. The Bishop of Mananthavady Syro-Malabar Diocese, Mar Emmanuel Pothanamuzhi, who passed away last night will be laid to rest at the cathedral at Kaniyaram, near Manathavady, on Tuesday morning.

Mar Emmanuel Pothanamuzhi was 72. He had been suffering from a kidney ailment, and was undergoing treatment at the St. Joseph's hospital in Mananthavady.

Mar Emmanuel Pothanamuzhi was ordained as a priest of the CMI order in 1964. He was ordained as the second Bishop of Mananthavady following the transfer of Bishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy as Bishop of Tamarassery, in 1996.

The deceased bishop had served as the founder Principal of Christ College, Bangalore for 14 years, and earlier as a lecturer in Botany at the Sacred Hearts College, Thevara, Kochi.

Mar Emmanuel Pothanmuzhi was a Syndicate member of the Bangalore University. He was the superior general of the CMI, Delhi Province. He also served as the Provincial Councillor of S.H. Province, Kalamassery from 1970 to 1972, and as the rector of Dharmaram College, Bangalore.

Born in Nadukkara, Muvatupuzha, he is the son of Pothanamuzhi Varghese and Mariamma.
