Madurai, Coimbatore benches for organ transplant panel

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI APRIL 7. The State Government has decided to extend the activities of the committee for authorisation of non-related organ transplants to two more centres in southern districts.

The committee, hitherto functioning only in Chennai, would have sittings in Madurai and Coimbatore also. The formalities of setting up the benches were on and they were likely to begin functioning in May, the Health Minister, S. Semmalai, said here on Sunday.

"This would to a great extent benefit patients from southern districts, who had to come all the way to Chennai for counselling. We have asked the department to execute the formalities so that we can begin the counselling by May.

The Government was also going into suggestions made by people's groups for NGO (non-governmental organisations) participation in monitoring the functioning of the committee. "There have been complaints that the committee did not stick to rules. We have been looking into ways and of encouraging NGOs involvement in this project too".

In pulse polio immunisation, AIDS control programmes, an anti-filariasis drive and the campaign against hepatitis, NGO participation had shown positive results which would be replicated in other areas too, said Mr. Semmalai.
