According to the Superintendent of Police, Ravishankar Ayyanar, about half-a-dozen naxalites thronged the bank branch around 1.30 p.m. and attacked the two security men outside the bank. They tied them with ropes and snatched the weapons and 10 rounds of bullets from their possession. Later, they entered the chambers of the branch manager, Ramakrishna, and pointed a pistol at him and asked him to open the cash chest. Even as the manager opened the cash chest, the naxalites took away Rs. 5 lakhs from it. They also took another Rs. 2 lakhs from the cash counter. Before leaving the bank, they said they would distribute the cash among the poor in the drought-hit areas. They did not touch the gold and other jewellery deposited with the bank. They walked out of the bank raising slogans: "RK Amar Rahe''. There were four staff members working in the bank when the naxalites raided the branch. The naxalites, before fleeing, locked the bank from outside. There were about 25 customers in the bank.
