Speaking at a programme to observe World Health Day, on the theme "Healthy environments for children", organised by the World Health Organisation and the Health Department, Dr. Maalakaraddy said cities had become breeding grounds for diseases, thanks to pollution. The Health Department alone could not keep the environment clean. Society at large should ensure that people did not pollute their surroundings. The minister said pollution-related diseases accounted for 21 per cent of deaths in China. One in every five children aged below five in the world died of respiratory problems. Dr. Maalakaraddy released an information booklet on "Concept and formulations to rejuvenate organs (Regenerative medicine)", by H.T.Gangal, a surgeon from Hubli. Kagodu Thimmappa, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, released a book written by Dr. Gangal on "Percutaneous Endoscopy" based on the original research work done by him. Mr. Thimmappa said medical professionals, zilla panchayat members, and others should involve themselves in the drive towards a healthy environment. He said the water in rivers such as Tunga and Bhadra, which used to be clean earlier, was not even potable now and could not be used for irrigation.
