By K. T. Jagannathan
A two-member team, headed by Director Automotive, Heiner Schmeck, is now in India, making preliminary contacts with Government officials in select States and at the Centre. Further, the team has also held informal private parleys with some infrastructure companies. According to Mr. Schmeck, the German company is looking at opportunities for working in close co-ordination with varied State governments especially in the integrated transportation filed. Ideally, he said, Dornier could sort of facilitate States to draw up transportation master plans and escort them to their logical end through participation in implementation. Michael C. Blum, Senior Manager (Business Consulting), said the transportation master plan that his company was talking about would encompass the entire gamut of issues in integrated transportation management - from research to strategy and organisational set-ups. The master plan, he indicated, would cover crucial aspects such as road safety, public education and the like. Mr. Schmeck said Dornier had done similar works for Moscow and Riyadh. Even as it was keen on helping the local governments with transportation master plans, Dornier, he said, would also look at the option of working with infrastructure companies by participating in project-specific initiatives. With its experience, Mr. Blaum claimed, Dornier could help the States in the formulation of bids for these projects. At the same time, wherever opportunities presented, it could help those bidders through better and integrated formulation of their strategies and response to bids. The German outfit has also shown considerable interest in providing sophisticated accident-proof signalling systems to the Indian Railways. The two have already held informal discussions with the Indian Railway officials in Delhi. The encouraging response, it was argued, would see the German company come out with a formal proposal to the Indian Railways soon. Dorner, Mr. Schmeck said, was also keen on exploring business opportunities in water resource management and process improvements. Dornier would wait for the emerging response in India before formulating a formal strategy for its presence in India. At present, it has roped in T. Sridhar, who has several years of association with German firms, as its Indian adviser.
