From April 11, Agra the city of Taj will join a select band of 15 cities which have already been networked under the ITS. Internet ticketing is aimed at decongesting the serpentine queues at reservation counters. The tickets can be home delivered by courier in any of the cities coming under the ITS or picked up in New Delhi. The 15 cities which have the facility are: Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Secundarabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Nagpur, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kanpur and the National Capital Region. The system, which was introduced here on August 3, 2002, is being assisted by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. At present, about 2,000 reserved tickets are being issued daily under the ITS. The new powers given to the DRMS include authority to contract one-time cleaning of any area, which may have become very dirty and needs special inputs such as purchase of equipment needed for sanitation-related activities.
