Karun does the country proud

Karun Chandok, who notched up his maiden win in the opening round of the British Formula-3 (Scholarship class) at Donington Park on Sunday.

CHENNAI April 7. Karun Chandok scored the first F-3 win of his career in the opening round of the British Formula-3 (Scholarship class) championship at Donington Park (England) on Sunday.

He also backed it up with a fighting second place finish in Race 2, which makes Karun the first Indian to lead an international Formula-3 championship.

Karun did not get off to the best start when he missed the majority of the test session owing to clutch problems. However, Karun qualified third for race one.

In the second qualifying, he struggled with imbalance in the car and ended in fifth position on the grid for race 2.

In race 1, Karun made a splendid start and on lap three, leader Ernesto Viso made a mistake under pressure and spun off, and Chandok grabbed the lead. He finished two seconds ahead of Christian England.

In race two, he lost ground as he tried to avoid Christian England but soon moved up the order passing Justin Sherwood on lap one and then Ivor McCullogh.

A lap later, Ernesto Viso made another error, which resulted in T-sport drivers Steven Kane and Chandok moving up to first and second positions respectively.

"It's the perfect start to the season," Karun said after the races.

The results:

Race 1: 1. Karun Chandok (22:10.325s), 2. Christian England (+1.9s), 3. Steven Kane (+9.7s).

Race 2: 1. Kane (22:05.60s), 2. Chandok (+9.5s), 3. Ivor McCullogh (+10).
