This Day That Age
From the Editorials: "The house-fly is always with us; only it is in larger numbers in the hot, steamy summer months. It disputes pride of place with the mosquito as the biggest single menace to the health of the people, by contaminating the food and drink it sits on. Yet its brood cannot be eliminated from certain areas by systematic and sustained spraying of disinfectants, as with mosquitoes. During some parts of the year, flies seem almost to have disappeared, only to reappear later. The only thing to do, therefore, is to prevent edibles, drinks and their containers from coming into contact with flies by using wire-gauze covers and cages. The more this becomes the practice in households and eating houses, the less the chances of contamination. Of course, most towns have municipal bye-laws insisting on this, but enforcement is seldom rigorous or uniform. The Corporation of Lahore appears to have decided that the city must be saved not only from goondas, but also from flies and human peddlers of dirt in the form of eatables. Under threat of punishment under Martial Law, under which the city is now functioning, action will be taken against delinquents. A notification lays down that all shopkeepers dealing in food, like sweetmeat sellers, meat-sellers and fruit-sellers must have their shops made fly-proof by wire-gauze. Hotels, restaurants, and bakeries are particularly instructed to take this precaution. They are also asked to keep not only their own premises but also the areas in front of them clean.
