Indefensible

Sir, — This refers to the Editorial `Indefensible' ( April 5 ). A dispassionate analysis would prove that equally indefensible is the continuance of Saddam's obdurate avariciousness. ``A desensitised world'' encompasses Iraq and its people also.

The ``fatalistic mood of resignation in the capitals around the world'' was the result of the prolonged defiance of the U.N. resolutions by the tyrant and his unfortunate grip over the grieving citizens. History has witnessed such sadistic persons and their fatal end by wars. It will be of little help to sob and seek other nations into the fray; instead, we can explore the expediency of ending the escalation.

S. Srimoolanathan,

* * *

Sir, — Nothing can illustrate better the profound resentment of the peace-loving people worldwide than your caustic comment: ``A desensitised world, introduced to the war games during the 1991 conflict in the Gulf, has apparently become immunised to the poignant and heart-rending scenes of human tragedy, being brought forcefully home by a plethora of independent media organisations''. More particularly, the use of cluster bombs by the coalition forces leading to a heavy toll of civilians in Iraq is reprehensible even as it violates all canons of war. What is even more tragic is that the raison d'etre of the United Nations has become meaningless, and its credibility has suffered a serious and irreversible erosion. This damage can never be undone by any act of atonement.

P.K. Varadarajan,

Chennai
