Traffic problems plague Vanchiyoor residents

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 6. Traffic congestion at Kaithamukku and Pettah market junctions have become a cause of concern for residents of Vanchiyoor and Palkulangara areas in the city.

The grievance was voiced at a meeting of residents with the Vanchiyoor police in the city on Sunday.

Residents said that they were hard pressed to drop their children to school on time and reach for work owing to the congestion in front of the Regional Passport Office (RPO) at Kaithamukku.

Hundreds of persons from different parts of the State arrive daily at the RPO for processing their travel documents.

Their vehicles are often parked on either side of the narrow road in front of the RPO causing traffic on the road to be held up for hours during morning and evening rush hours. The narrow road is an arterial connection to the city for hundreds of residents of the area.

There is also a lack of parking space for scores of vehicles of customers arriving at a textile shop in the area.

When contacted, the Sub Inspector (Vanchiyoor), Radhakrishnan, said that efforts were on to streamline the traffic at Kaithamukku. The traffic police constabulary was being consulted. Police and residents have decided to place no parking boards along the narrow stretch. One side parking has been allowed for two-wheelers during low traffic hours on the road.

Similarly, the police are making efforts to decongest the Pettah market junction. Hawkers and vendors will not be allowed to ply their trade on the roadside. Residents have complained that this was one of the main reasons for traffic hold ups in the area.

Parking would not be allowed on the road in front of the market complex. A wide area lower down the road will be designated as parking area for those arriving at the market.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said there had been no complaints of eve-teasing, burglary, drug peddling, riotous behaviour or goondaism from the residents.
