Parab and Goud propel Elite-C to easy win

By Our Sports Reporter

Elite-C's Satyajit Parab hoists Plate-A's Ananthapadmanabhan for a six during his unbeaten 95 on the final day of their Duleep Trophy tie in Hyderabad on Sunday.

HYDERABAD APRIL 6. Satyajit Parab and Yere Goud guided Elite-C to a convincing nine-wicket win over Plate-A in the Duleep Trophy championship at Gymkhana Grounds here on Sunday.

When play resumed, Elite-C, which was 24 without loss, needed another 144 for an outright victory. Shiv Sundar Das was circumspect as the first 12 overs produced just 20 runs before he nibbled at an outswinger to be caught behind off fast bowler Dodda Ganesh.

Once Yere Goud arrived, he changed the complexion of the game with some scintillating strokeplay. At the other end, for someone content to let things happen, Satyajit Parab played his "best innings in Duleep Trophy.'' He was a completely transformed player once he had Goud for company. Delightful on-drives and perfectly executed lofted shots dotted his innings.

Parab's partner Goud was in uncharacteristic hurry today, clouting leg-spinner Ananthapadmanabhan for a straight six and following it up with a superb on-drive. He was, however, lucky to be dropped twice on 18.

First, slip fielder Abhijit Kale floored him when he was surprised by a delivery that spun and kicked off left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi and in the very next ball was fortunate to see Yashpal Singh miss a skier at deep mid-on. Goud never looked back.

Once Parab and Goud began to treat the bowlers with disdain, the fielding team seemed to have given up. And Parab (95 not out, 172m, 138b, 7x4, 4x6) soon launched into a series of breathtaking strokes. He too hit Ananthapadmanabhan for a straight six and then diverted his attention to off-spinner Faisal Sheikh. He slammed a six and then found the long-off fence twice in one Faisal over.

Ananthapadmanabhan's next over cost 21 with Parab picking up three fours and a straight six. That 52 were scored in three overs reflected the mood Parab and Goud (50 not out, 76m, 71b, 4x4, 3x6) were in. The duo was determined to seal the contest before lunch and proved successful too as Elite-C romped home 31 minutes before the break.

The two were involved in an unbeaten parternership of 128 in 21.1 overs. Fittingly, the winning shot was a huge six over square-leg — and out of the ground — by Parab off Barrington Rowland. The previous ball too was sent to the fence in the same direction.

It was a pity that not even one selector bothered to watch the proceedings here on all four days. One wonders how the honourable gentlemen assess a cricketer without seeing him at his best.

After today's win, Elite-C has 16 points from three matches. According to captain Das, his team's last league match against Plate-B at Kochi will decide the Duleep Trophy champion.

The scores:

Plate-A — 1st innings: 263.

Elite-C — 1st innings: 278.

Plate-A — 2nd innings: 182.

Elite-C — 2nd innings: Satyajit Parab (not out) 95, S.S. Das c Naidu b Ganesh 24, Yere Goud (not out) 50; Extras (lb-2, w-1) 3; Total (for one wkt.) 172.

Fall of wicket: 1-44.

Plate-A bowling: Ganesh 12-3-16-1, Joshi 17-1-38-0, Faisal 6-1-38-0, Ananthapadmanabhan 10-0-66-0, Barrington 1-0-12-0.
