Karnataka-Bangalore
By Our Special Correspondent
The Additional Chief Secretary, J.P.Sharma, said here on Saturday that the Women and Child Development Department had been given instructions to release funds. Mr. Sharma disclosed this while participating in a seminar on `Adolescent love syndrome and violence' organised by the Mahila Dakshata Samiti. The lack of moral and religious education in schools and colleges was one of the reasons for the violent behaviour of adolescents, he said. Parents too had a duty to guide their children in the right direction, he said. The Principal of NMKRV College, K.S.Umadevi, said violence by adolescents was often a reaction to parents attempting to curtail their freedom. There was unanimity among participants that items such as acid should not be made easily available to men who misused it for violent acts against young women who did not respond to their advances. Increased public awareness, the precautions young women could take against attacks, making first-aid available to victims, and action by the Government to curtail violence against women were among the resolutions passed. The Bangalore Police Commissioner, M.D.Singh, said hardware and other shops dealing in acid had been told not to sell it to young men in large quantities without ascertaining their identity. The Bangalore police and its helpline were always ready to help women victims of violence, he added.
