Hi-tech labour rooms at Sagar Apollo

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE APRIL 6. The Sagar Apollo Hospital has opened "Birthing Suites" that offer expectant mothers the comfort of going through labour, delivery, recovery and the post-partum stage (LDRP) in one room.

The LDRP suites, the first of their kind in India, are an improvised version of birthing rooms that are very popular in the West, said Dr. Gaekwad, vice-president of Sagar Apollo.

The suites are elegantly designed and offer pregnant women a family-oriented maternity care system that completes the entire birthing process in one room, except when the mother-to-be is at high risk, he said.

Each suite— Sagar Apollo has two at present— has an adjustable labour bed, a private bath, blanket warmer and a walk-in shower.

The lively décor comprises a cradle, telephone, stereo, television, DVD, mini refrigerator, a computer with Internet connection, a recliner and a lounger for an attendant, a drawing room and another bedroom for family members, the doctor said.

Just like birthing suites in the West, here too mothers-to-be will be partnered with a specially trained nurse who would counsel and educate them all about having an easy delivery.

Pregnant women would also have the option of getting labour analgesia (painless labour), Dr. Gaekwad said.

Dr. Gaekwad said the suite had a stylish cot, which could be converted into a delivery bed and examination lights and state-of-the-art medical equipment, which could be set up instantly.
