CHENNAI MAR. 21. The golden jubilee of the ascension of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Jayendra Saraswati, to the Kanchi Peetham, began here on Friday with the honouring of 180 eminent artistes and social workers at a function here.

The release of a special cover by the postal department and providing special cancellation marked the "Swarna Jayanti Mahotsav", in which heads of various Maths participated.

The Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Su.Thirunavukkarasar, who released the special cover on the occasion, paid glowing tributes to the Kanchi Sankara Math for its social welfare programmes aimed at uplifting the economically weaker sections.

Receiving the first cover, the former Judge of the Supreme Court, S.Ratnavelpandian, said the Head of the Kanchi Math was not only a religious leader, but also a leader of the society.

Those honoured by the Acharya included the Maharashtra Minister, Shrikant Jichkar, K.J. Jesudas, Zakir Hussain and the parents of Sankara Vijayendra Saraswati.

Explaining the significance of honouring those who rendered `Thirumurai', the Acharya said that of late the singing of `Thevaram' and `Thiruppugazh' in temples had stopped. Further, the number of those who learnt `stotras' and `sastras' had now come down.

The Srirangam Jeeyar, Ranga Narayana, the president of Ramakrishna Math, Madurai, Swami Kamalatmananda, Madurai, Thirupanandal, Thiruvavaduthurai and Thondamandala Adheenams and Sri Ooran Adigal were among those who attended it.

Recalling his long association with the Sankaracharya, the Jeeyar said the occasion had brought together the various Hindu religious institutions.

As part of the celebrations, Sankara Vijayendra Saraswati unveiled a `sthoopi' of the seven chakras of energy centres of the body at the Siva Sakthi Homes in Porur today.

Our Tirumala Correspondent reports:

Sri Jayendra Saraswati today performed the Kumbabishegam of the Adi Sankara temple in the `stupi' located on the banks of the holy `pushkarani' adjoining the Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala.
