Jaya & Mithali hit centuries

KOLKATA MARCH 21 . Defending champion Western Railway outplayed South Central by seven wickets while Northern outclassed Southern by 140 runs in the 17th all-India inter-Railway women's cricket league tournament here on Friday.

The day's highlight was two fine centuries. India and Northern opener Jaya Sharma smashed an unbeaten 121 against Southern and the other century came from India middle-order Mithali Raj of South Central who compiled 106 against holder Western. Southern tasted its second defeat and was half way out of the tournament.

Jaya's unbeaten 121 meant North ended with 239 for four in 48 overs. Southern was allout for 99 with five batswomen getting run out. After Mithali's 106 enabled South Central reach 207 for nine in 50 overs, Western's diminutive opener Sulakshna `Gauri' Naik hammered 90 and India star Hemlata Kala brought up a quick 56 not out to help their team reach 210 for three in 42.2 overs.

The scores:

Northern 239 for 4 in 48 overs (Jaya Sharma 121 n.o., Renu Margaret 33) bt Southern 99 in 38.5 overs (Preethi Singh 28).

South Central 207 for 9 in 50 overs (Mithali Raj 106, Nooshin Al-Qadir 27; Seema Pujare 3-27) lost to Western 210 for 3 in 42.2 overs (Sulakshna Naik 90, Hemlata Kala 56 n.o.). — Our Special Correspondent.
