Priority has been given to improving the traffic system, garbage removal, electrification, drinking water, slum welfare, poverty eradication, women's development, food scheme for Anganwadis, welfare of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes, housing and urban development. For women's welfare, an allocation of Rs. 1.21 crores has been made and a similar amount has been set aside for the welfare of the slum areas. The allocation for job-oriented projects is Rs. 80 lakhs and for the welfare of the aged, persons with disabilities and children, Rs. 60 lakhs has been set apart. The budget allocation for tourism development is Rs. 1 crore, for infrastructure development, Rs. 1.17 crores and for roads, Rs. 7.5 crores. The Mahatma Gandhi Park on Kollam Beach has been given a facelift under the "build-operate-transfer'' system. The formal inauguration of the renovated park would be held in April. Rs. 25 lakh has been allocated for the construction of an indoor stadium. An allocation of Rs. 10 lakhs has been made for the link road from the Kollam Boat Jetty to Asramam. A statute of the Late C. Kesavan would be installed in front of the Municipal Town Hall.
