The bank has remitted Rs.59,830, the annual expenditure involved in looking after the animal. This is the highest amount received so far under the programme. The bank adopted a wallaby last year having paid Rs.19,992 for its maintenance. The Executive Director of Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens here has appreciated the gesture of the bank and its involvement in wildlife conservation. He says this move should inspire other organisations to participate in the novel scheme. The programme was launched last year by the zoo authorities under which interested organisations or individuals can adopt animals or bird. The scheme provides for income tax exemption under 80G of the Income Tax Act. The zoo authorities will look after the animals, while those adopting them, and their families will have fringe benefits such as free entry to the zoo. So far, 33 animals have been adopted under the programme and the zoo has received Rs.2.6 lakh on this count. The popularity of the scheme has led to optimism that more animals will be adopted in the days ahead, creating greater awareness on wildlife conservation.
