UNDP-supported programme comes to a close

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL March 21. The UNDP-sponsored South Asian Poverty Alleviation Programme was formally declared closed at a glittering function in Orvakal near here on Friday. The Minister for Employment Generation and DWCRA, B. Gopalakrishna Reddy, the Resident Representative of UNDP at Nepal, Henning Karcher, and others took part in the celebrations. Over 10,000 women who had become members of self-help groups under the guidance of the UNDP programme greeted the guests.

The project, which was launched in 1995 in 750 villages of three districts in the State, adopted social mobilisation as the guiding principle for poverty reduction.

Addressing the function, Mr. Gopalakrishna Reddy said the UNDP project had influenced the Government to modify its programme in the entire State. More than money given by the UNDP, the concept of women-oriented approach for poverty alleviation was adopted by the Government. The groups, which were confined to savings before the UNDP project, created wonders after they were given a free hand. The Minister and Mr. Henning Karcher presented the title deeds to the president of the mandal-level federation, which bought 50 acres of land for the members at a cost of Rs 40 lakhs.

Two injured: Meanwhile, two women sustained head injuries when the tents collapsed at the UNDP closing ceremony. The victims were identified as Salibi of Dhone and Ratnamma of Mahabubunagar district.

The tents collapsed due to high velocity wind at the meeting. A pole injured Salibi, who sustained a serious bleeding injury in the head. She was rushed to the hospital here. Later, another woman was hurt when an audiospeaker box fell on her head causing a head injury. She was also rushed to the hospital. The women were rattled by the incidents.
