The principal sessions judge, A.R. Ramalingam, today passed the order on a petition filed by the Central Crime Branch police, on the ground that custodial interrogation was important for further progress in the investigation. Though the agency sought custody for 10 days, the judge granted only three days, and asked the Crime Branch police to produce the persons in court at 10.30 a.m. on March 25. During the period of custodial interrogation, the accused could meet their counsel daily at 6 p.m. According to the prosecution, the Anna Salai police have arrested three persons in December last in connection with the smuggling of gold bars. But no case was registered on condition that they reveal the identity of the receiver of stolen goods. Once identified, they `abducted' Bakthavatsalu from Villupuram and forced him to part with Rs. 2.5 lakhs. The four were arrested on complaints from Mr. Bakthavatsalu.
