Letters to the Editor
Sir, Lakshmi Viswanathan's article, `Catalyst to change' (March 16) on Rukmini Devi was very interesting and illuminating, especially details of her drafting Mysore Vasudevacharya for songs in the epic dance-dramas, a novelty and a path-breaking venture using the Bharatanatyam techniques. My mother was an ardent fan and admirer of Rukmini for her grace, charm and talent and used to refer to the 1930s and 40s as glorious decades which saw the emergence to the fore of many women in their respective fields of specialisation. All this was made possible by Mahatma Gandhi who championed the cause of women, and coupled with the fever and fervour of the freedom struggle, many women realised their full potential. Also, we owe a great deal to the social reformers of the earlier era like Harbildas Sarda and Ram Mohan Roy who worked for the emancipation of women. Alladi Sarada Balasubramanian, Hyderabad
