Deora quits post

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI MARCH 15. The president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee, Murali Deora, has resigned from the post. In his resignation letter of March 13, addressed to the party president, Sonia Gandhi, Mr. Deora, a Rajya Sabha member, said that he was resigning after holding the post for 22 years to make way for a new leader. He said that the parliamentary work was taking more of his time and he was also involved in the NGOs such as Red Cross and Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology. Political circles here expressed surprise over the decision of Mr. Deora and said his arch-rival and former Lok Sabha MP, Gurudas Kamat, as having "succeeded in staging a coup."
