Hurriyat leaders meet Sonia

By Vinay Kumar

NEW DELHI MARCH 15. After being pushed to the wall by the hardline stance against it by the ruling BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre, the All-Party Hurriyat Conference today sought to create some political space for itself by meeting the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, here.

A two-member Hurriyat delegation, comprising the former Hurriyat chairman, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief, Yaseen Malik, met Ms. Gandhi, also the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, at her 10 Janpath residence. The Kashmiri leaders told newspersons that they would have interactions with other political leaders as well.

Hurriyat sources said the delegation apprised Ms. Gandhi of the ban on religious institutions, including madrassas, in the Valley and told her that the secular credentials of the country had been adversely affected after the BJP-led Government assumed office at the Centre.

With the Congress-PDP alliance coming to power in Jammu and Kashmir, the thinking in the Congress is that the party has a much greater traditional role in Kashmir. As the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, has "hijacked" the agenda of the separatists, the Hurriyat feels the need to assert its relevance and remove the impression of its being a "Pakistani puppet". Today's meeting is expected to go a long way in widening the political consultations.

Since the Congress-PDP coalition is also involved in the "healing touch" process, it is felt that Ms. Gandhi's meeting with the Hurriyat leaders would send a "soothing signal" to the Valley.
