Parties urged to work unitedly

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD March 5. The ongoing war of words between the treasury and Opposition benches in the Assembly notwithstanding, a senior TDP legislator has suggested that the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Leader of the Opposition, Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy, and representatives of all political parties conduct joint visits to districts to assess the drought situation and take necessary steps to mitigate the problems faced by people.

``In the hour of the grave crisis facing the State, all political parties should work unitedly in the interest of the affected people instead of politicising the situation,'' the TDP legislator, B. Rajasekhara Reddy, said.

Participating in the debate on the drought situation that commenced in the Assembly on Wednesday, Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy expressed concern over the non-availability of food and even loans to repay past debts, leading to migration in search of employment. "This is one natural calamity that is beyond anybody's control and the Government should accordingly take disaster control measures as it is the only solution to mitigate the problems faced by people,'' he suggested.

Meanwhile, another ruling party legislator, P. Raghunatha Reddy, has launched a scathing attack on the Congress claiming that the decades old rule of the main Opposition was the reason behind people's plight.

M Buddhaprasad, N Rajyalakshmi, Sunita Lakshma Reddy, J Ramamohana Rao (all Cong.), M.S Parthasarathy (BJP) and K Atchannaidu, P.V Ratnaiah, K Revatipathi (TDP) also spoke.

K. Chandrasekhara Rao (TRS) accused the TDP of inconsistencies regarding starvation deaths. He cited the plea of the Telugu Desam member, M. V. V. S. Murthy, in the Lok Sabha for sufficient Central funds wherein he had mentioned starvation deaths, something the State Government persistently denied.

The Minister for Higher Education, Mohd N. Farooq, vehemently rejected this while E. Dayakar Rao (TDP) alleged that the Opposition was politicising this.

N. Narsimhaiah (CPI-M) castigated the Government for issuing a GO imposing "user charges'' for borewell water and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
