`Child marriages will be prevented'

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore March 5. The Minister for Women and Children's Welfare, Motamma, today assured the Legislative Council that steps would be taken to ensure that child marriages were prevented, and that there were guidelines for mass marriages.

She was replying to Umashri and P. Ramiah, who brought to her notice that child marriages were still in vogue in North Karnataka, and that many a time they were conducted as part of mass marriages.

Ms. Umashri said that proof of age and registration of marriages had to be made available to district authorities by the organisers of mass marriages. Mr. Ramiah called for the strict implementation of the Child Marriage Act and punishment for those conducting child marriages.

M.C. Nanaiah said that an amendment had to be enacted by the State to make it mandatory for those conducting mass marriages to get clearance from district authorities. He said mass marriages were often conducted with political patronage.

The Chairman, B.L. Shankar, directed the minister to incorporate the suggestions and bring in an amendment in the current session of the Legislature.
